FORUM 12: NPR Podcasts

This week, we looked at Podcasts as Journalism by 1) defining "journalism," 2) looking at historical influences on journalism podcasts esp. why they are particularly well-suited to niche, long-form content and, 3) did a case study on National Public Radio (NPR)'s podcasting efforts.

For the forum, choose an episode from one of NPR's podcasts listed at this link https://www.npr.org/podcasts/organizations/1. You can choose whatever you want, but if you are having a hard time deciding some that I think you might be particularly interested are *Code Switch, *Invisibilia, and *Embedded (NOTE: You may NOT choose an episode of a show already discussed in a previous forum or assignment). Answer the following questions:

Do the podcast hosts characterize themselves as Journalists? If so, how?
What credentials do the hosts present as evidence that listeners should pay attention to their journalistic insight?
Is a long-form podcast an effective medium for reporting on this topic? If so, why? If not, why not?
How would the storytelling differ if this story were reported in:
A newspaper?
On television news?
In a documentary film?

To receive full credit you should make a meaningful comment on at least two (2) of your classmates' posts. A meaningful comment is defined as 2-3 sentences that demonstrate clearly you have 1) read their original post in its entirety, and 2) you are responding to their thoughts and ideas in a clear and respectful way.

PODCAST DRAFT

For this assignment, you will create a full draft of your episode. You should endeavor to produce a draft that is as complete as possible in order to get the most effective feedback possible. Next week we will give each other feedback on our drafts, and you will continue to revise your work until you submit a final version as part of your Podcast Package at the end of the semester.

To submit your work, click "File" > "Export" > and choose "Export Project to MP3 File." Soundtrap may direct you to click "Save" or to wait until the project is mixed on its servers before it will allow you to export it. Once you have the exported MP3 submit that file to D2L. To submit your MP3 to D2L, click on the "Podcast Draft" thread in MODULE 12 and then click "Start a New Thread." You can title the thread with the name of your podcast and then give a brief description of what you have produced so far in the text box. Scroll down to where is says "Add attachments," click that and then click "Upload." To finalize submission of your MP3, click "Post." After submitting, you should go back and verify that your submission has posted correctly to ensure you receive full credit for your work.

You should also utilize the "Share" feature in Soundtrap to share the project to my email: jasonguthrie@clayton.edu.

There are no comments required on your classmates' submissions this week as we will be giving each other detailed feedback on our Trailer Drafts next week.
